Hepatic Encephalopathy: A Review

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a reversible syndrome observed in patients with liver disease. The characterised by spectrum of neuropsychiatric abnormalities resulting from the accumulation neurotoxic substances bloodstream and ultimately brain. HE huge burden to patients, caregivers, healthcare system. Common treatments for HE, including rifaximin lactulose, have been shown reduce risk recurrence, frequency hospitalisations, hospital costs, mortality. New research therapeutics exist, faecal transplants small-molecule therapies such as branched-chain amino acids. This review article provides general overview current understanding HE.
